What are computer viruses?
Computer viruses are manmade programs or codes that have negative, even potentially dangerous effects on your computer. Viruses spread from computer to computer through networks- just like you catch a cold from a friend or family member who has one. And with the vast number of people logging on to the information superhighway i.e. the Internet, viruses can spread at an alarmingly fast rate unless they are curbed with computer virus protection measures. A virus may not necessarily cause too much harm-some viruses have very mild effects, but trust us; you don't want to take that chance. Some of the big viruses can bring huge corporations or government agencies to a grinding halt, so it's always good to get computer virus protection.
How can I get computer virus protection?
It is best to take a two-pronged approach to prevent your computer from getting affected by viruses. The first thing you can and should do is buy antivirus software for optimum computer virus protection. Antivirus software detects and stops viruses in your computer's hard disk before they get a chance to do serious damage. The antivirus scans the files in your computer, as well as your e-mail content, the attachments that go with it, and downloads too. If any program is found that appears to be similar to any virus that is known to the antivirus software, it gives you an alert message and takes steps to remove the virus from your system.
The second thing you should do is to use your common sense when it comes to receiving or downloading information off the Internet. Don't open anything that comes from strangers, especially porno. Unless you know the person who has sent you the e-mail, delete it instantly, chain mails included. You also need to keep an eye out for attachments because they are the main entrance ports for computer viruses to enter and infest your system. And if you already have anti virus software, keep updating it and you will be safe. Follow the above-mentioned two-pronged computer virus protection approach religiously, and forget all about viruses, past present and future!
